This week in Columbus

This week in Columbus was a busy one for food activists. Food, Inc. is showing at The Drexel in Bexley. A well documented overview of the destruction of the American Dream by corporate food interest. Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness and all that. I think the Amish have it right on a lot of issues, notwithstanding religious viewpoints. North Market hosted a panel discussion that brought together people such as Greener Grocer, Clintonville Community Market, Snowville Creamery Milk Company, the Restaurant Widow blogger and Wayward Seed Farm to present their concerns for food in our society. A very good start to reaching the public. Vote With Your Fork. I think this is a very important thing. Never … Read entire article »

Food Summit!!!

The following was sent out to the list serve of Slow Food Columbus. This is a big deal for Columbus. I hope that this really comes together and brings a lot of people to the table to talk about and take action in creating food systems that work towards bringing quality food to everyone’s table. Dear member of the Central Ohio food community, Thanks for expressing an interest in a food summit later this summer. While we had tentatively scheduled the event for July 2, a variety of considerations, including the availability of some of the groups that we hope to see there, the time-consuming process of broadening our network of contacts, and the need to ensure some lead time before the meeting, have prompted us to aim instead … Read entire article »

What’s in your Future, Foodie?

Food production is in full force in central Ohio. The pick-your-owns are finishing up on early strawberries and asparagus, newly created community gardens are full of leafy greens and more gardens are added every day. For those really into local food, you could even plan a trip to a produce auction in Amish country up north. Perhaps you would buy a pressure cooker or dehydrators. Units start at $30-$40 and are well worth the effort to put up scads of produce for winter when they are at their peak. From the commercial point of view, I foresee that as more farmers come into being, that more local produce auctions might spring up as side lines to farm markets that become more permanent in other parts of town. … Read entire article »

What’s the future of food in your Life?

This weeks Ethicurean Chew on This site featured a story about North Market. I hope I lifted the right part for you to get there and read it. Here goes. Nourishing Ohio’s downtowns, through community-food partnerships by Guest @ 12:40 pm on April 25th, 2009. North Market in Columbus, Ohio. Creative Commons/Flickr photo by TheeErin. The Organic Consumers Association also has a number of timely articles this week about the state of food in the country on a daily basis. Read these sites when ever you can. Stay informed. Support the movement. I think it’s wonderful that farmers markets are blossoming all over. I just picked up the list of 20 or so local farmers in the Sarasota, Fl area that have CSA’s, their own farm stands and/or set … Read entire article »

What’s Local Doc?

I’m way overdue in writing something. I’m in Florida dealing with some personal stuff. Haven’t forgotten local food though. Here we have Worden Farm of Punta Gorda setting up twice a week. The Florida season is practically opposite to that of Ohio. Many migrant workers go from here to Ohio following the harvest seasons. Never forget about these forgotten workers. The Coalition of Immokalee Workers is a strong and vibrant organization representing those who harvest the tomatoes on your tacos at Taco Bell and the sauce on your pizzas at Pizza Hut. Tell management they deserve a raise. We still need them in this transitional world. And they need our help in finding equality. For too long have the … Read entire article »
